2 7 8 7 , 0 8 4 United States Patent Office 2,787,084 6 MEMO PAD AND PENCLIR, HOLDER A.Ipbeus W. Larson, Chflton, Wis. Application February 9, 1956, Serial No. 564,401 3 Clainis. (C]. 45-.5) 10 This invertion relates to a memo pad ajid pencil 15 holder. An object oi this ;nventior, is to provide a - combined memo pad and I)encil holder which is adapted to be detachably seciir,-d t,) t'ne bottorn of a telepho ne iiistrumeiii for holdiiig the pp,(i in front of tLi-, instrLim,nt. 20 Another obier@t of. this invention is to Provide an improved pen(-,ii @liold3r which is formed integral with the pad constrliction so that a pencil will at all times be secured in a bandy pos@tion for use with the telephoiie instrument. 2 5 A further obliect of tfiis invention is to provide in combination wil@li a telepl-ione instrument -,t memo pad and means for adhesively securi-@ig the front flap of the pad to the lower side of tb.e in@@trtiment bqse. vvith the foregoing and other objects in view which will 30 appear as the description proceeds, the invention cotisists of- certain no@,el details of consruct-ioii and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed otit in the claims, it beiii.- understood that changes may be made in the coistrlicticii and arrangement of 35 parts without departiri-g ffor@'i the spirit of the invention as claimed. Referring to the drawing: Figure I is a tov plan view c)f a memo pad constructed according to an embodi-m.-,.lt of this inveiition. 4 0 Fig. 2 is a fragm--Iltarv bottom rlaii v;ew of the pad. Fig. 3 is a fta.@mentary bottom plan of 'Lhe pad showing the pencil holder in its initiil extended position. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary seelional view taken on line 45 4-4 of- Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a f-ragmentary sectiopal view taken on line 5-5 Of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a f-ragmentary plan view of the pad with thip front flap raised frbni the -,,iriting sheet. 50 Fi.-. 7 is a fragmentary seelional view taken on line 7--i of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is i fragnientary side elevation showing the pad in applied ric@sition relative to a telephone instrument. Fig. 9 is a ;ragm-@ntary perspective view oii a reduced 55 section showing the pad applied to the telephone instrument. Referring to the drawing the nlimeral 10 desi.- nates generally -,t pad which is forpied of a pltirality of supel'- posed sheets 11 w'iiich are secured to a relatively stiff 60 cardboard bE,.cli@ 12. The pad 10 also includes a flap 13 which is formed integral with the back 12 through a cornecting hi-nge 14. The writing sheets 11 are firmly secured relative to th-. back 12 and the flap 13 by means of staples or other seciiring nieans IL5. 'Ehe flap or top 65 wall 13 is T)rovided adjacent the oppos@@to side edges thereof @-iith a pair of cut-outs 16 wh;ch are provided in order that the flap 13 n-iay be bent along sectional line 17 ond then extended beneath a telephone instrument, @d geilerally indicated at T. The instrtimeiit T is provid(, 70 with supporting feet or pads 18, and these pads or feet 18 are adapted to engage in the cut-outs 16. When the Patented Apr. 2, 1957 2 flap 13 is positioned beneath the instrument T with the feet 18 engagin.- in the cut-out 16, the flap 13 will be held against literal and longitudinal movement with respect to the instrument T. In order to more firmly secure the attachment of the flap 13 to the - @'nstruraent T, I have provided an adhesive coatiiig 19 which is disposed on 'he inner side of the flap 13. This coating 19 is a tacky 1!7,d ih,-@ coatina 19 ;s initially protected by nieans of a mask-ing tape 20. In applying the flap 13 to the bottoni of the iRstrLiment T t c tape 20 s re ved the tacky coatin.- 19, thereby exposing this tac coating iri order that the coating may adhesively secure tli,- flap .13 to the bottom of the instrument T. In order to provide a means whereby a pencil may be removably held in a position overlying the sheets 11, a rect@,ng,,ilar tongue 21 is cut as indicated by the lines 22 from the back 12 and also from a portion of the flip 13. There are two of these etits 22 which are: extended from the back 12 through the hin,@-. 14 into the rear portion of tiie flap 13. -f-rie truncated triaii,-Ull@gr head 23 is also clit from the back 12 and this head 23, as shown in Figs. 6 gnd 7, is adapted to en.@age a.aainst the fold forr@ied by betidiiag of the flap jl3 bpckwardly to an extended position for engagement beiieath the ihs'llrui-.ient T. iii Ioraiin.- the Dencil holder which is fo.-med by the tongue 21, ti'@e head 23 is ptished outwardly from the back 12 aiid 'Lhe ton,-ue 22 is ex'@ended r--arwerdly, as shown i-,i Fig. 3. T@ic tongtie 2.1 is theii bent urior@ itsel'i to form a looi,@i aiid this loop is then ptished forwardly beiweeii the cut lines 22 so that ilie loop i'oriiied by the bent tongue will be positio@-ied on the tipper side of the pad, as show@i in Fi.-@;' 7 and 9. The Done'A 24 rnay ther@ belextended thro-Ligh the pencil ho@lder vihich is formed by the ton-.uc 22 a@,id 'Lhe peiic-A 24 will be disrosed parallel witli the front o'L the instrliniciit T. In the use and application of this pad the flai) 13 is preferably made s,.,bstantially slioi-tcr.than the len@@th of the sheets 11. The flap 13 is bent rearw, arcily a-lon.@ the score line 17 and theil the head 25 w-ith the tongue 21 is pushed oltwqrdly from the bick 12, as show.,i in Fi-. 3. The tongtic 21 with the hr-,ad 23 is thin pus@@ed forwardly through the cut lines 22 so that a loop ,vill thereby be forni--d 6n the iii)per side of the pgd. At th.,s time the head 23 will be positioned with the inner edge thereof stibstantially contacting the fold Iiiie foriiied by bending the fiap 13 on the sebr-, line 17. The maskiii.- tape 20 is th--n removed from the tacky adhesive 19 and the flap 13 is then positioned beneath the instrjment T with ti-ie feet 18 --nga,-in,- in the cut-outs 16. At this tinie the pad will be disposed on the fiat surface on which the ment T is resting. What is
