1,537,580 10- is alloaved to spend freely therewith from the drum 3. AA/'Iien the scraper reaches the poiiit for diimping brali:es are@ applied to the, drum 3 aDd druin 4 is @stopped, tlitis 5 bringing the scrapei- to rest. Driim 2 is then caused to rotate by the enaine operator, to, Avincl the st,,tnding cable 9, tliereoln to tauten the san-ie. As the c,,tble 9 begins to tigbtel'i, t-lie suspension, cable or chain 13 10 fastened between the scraper ai-icl tl-ie pulley carriage 1,1, will become taut and lift the i-e@l,r of the, scraper free fro@m the ground. VIThen the cable 9 becomes talit or nearly taut, the cable or ch,,tin 13 will consequently 15 hoist the scraper entirely clear of the gro@tind andcompletely -Lipset it, thus effectually dumping the scraper, whereupon the drum 2 is allowed to run free relieving the tension on the, st,,tnding cable 9 and loosen20 ing the same permitting it to assume its normal slack state so th,,tt the scraper will be lowered again to the ground. The drum 4 is then allowed to spend the pulling cable 12 as the drtim 3 is ao@ain rotated to wind 25 the bacl@ing cable 15 thereon by which meolns the sci-aper is drawn bacl@,wardly to the poiiit for reloading. This operation is repeated until the, proper depth of exc@v,,ttion has been effected, the earth being thus 30 loaded, distributed or dumped at any desired point between the fixture 10 and the scaffold 5. The aret to,f excavation operation may be broadened or expanded at -will merely by movin the fixtures 10 or @ l@3 35 either by len,-thenin- or shortening tl-ie measured distance bet-@veen s-Lich fixtures and the scaffold, or by moving the fixtures one w-,ty or the other in ,in are, with the scaffold as @L center. If pref erred, as a matter of 40 expedieney, the free en(I of c,,tble 9 may be secured to the plish ctr 20, so that the line of scraper operations may be readily changed simply by pushing the car forwa;rd or bacl,-,w,,ird the desirecl distance, or re45 -ferring to Fig. 2, the platform on which the eiigine, aind scaffold. are moiinted, may be moved to, establish a new line of operations. Should it be desired to cart the earth a-way from the excavating area- an inclined rtin50 -w, ay 5a may be titilized, up which the scraper mav be draivn and upset,. to unload into a di,i@-ip cai-t or c@ir drawn iin position thereiinder where it will rpeeive, the load. 5@5 Vari.ous changes may be i-nacte iii the details andarra-iigement of parts shown ancl describecl without departing from tl-ie spirit ancl scope of my invention, and I do not desire to be i-estrieted in the ap eiided cl,,tims to the specific sti-Licture shown. 60 Tlavino- tlius described my inveiitioii, -,wha,t I claim as ne-w and desire to seelire by Letters-PateDt of the United St,,ttes is: 1.
