I t is also an object of this invention to pro5 5 vi de a method of heatinz one or more kilbs by drawina theretlirou('@ the waste heat or co n-ibustioi@ gases f rorn-an adjacent or a reinote kiln which is burning or being cooled. Th e metliod includes the step of drawing cool 60 air @ throuch a cooling kiln and tl-ie step of for cing the cool air, heated by passinz thr ough said cooling li:iln, into another kil@ for water smoking purposes. It also includes th e step of heating one kiln and the step of 65 pr eheating another kiln by drawing the combu stion gases froi.ii the kiln being heated thr ough the kiln to be preheated. Figure 14 is a vertical section on the line 14-14 of Figure 13. 16 Figure 15 is a view similar to Figure 13 but showiiig a slightly modified form of spreader from that shown in Figures 13 and 14. Figure 16 is a section on the line 16-16 20 of Figure 15. In Figure 1 there is shown a series of kilns arranged in line and connected to one another. These kilns are indicated by the letters A, B, C, D, E aiid F. 25 In r@igure 2 a rino- series of kiln-s is shown. In this series, in add.ition to the kilns sl-iown in Figure 1, there are five other kiln,@ designated G, H, I, J and K, connected to each ottier in the same manner that the kilns 30 of Figure I are, and connected to the kilns of Figure I at the end of the series. In Figtire 3 there is shown a I ongitudinal, vertical section of one of the kilns. Each kilti has the usual wall 1, which is eiretilar in 35 shape, with a base 2 made of brick, or other suitable iiiaterial. The walls are iistially made of brick. The floor of the kiln is indicated bvilthe numeral 3, which has openings 4 exteri(.Iin(r downwardly and terrninating in 40 -branches 5-that converg'e into a central chaiiib ' er 5a, from which there is an outlet or distributiiig flue 5b. This flue 56 is connected to the inlet flite 6 of an in-imediately adjacent kiln. This 45 inlet fliie, terminates on the inside of thp- wall of the kiln in a circular chamber 7. Immedihtely above the eireiilar chainber, and between a flash wall 8 which surrounds the floor of the kiln and the wall of the kiln proper, 50 is a combustion chamber 9. This combiistion chamber is separated f rom the circular chaiiiber 7 by means of a floor or partition 7a, which has a plurality of equally spaced holes or openin,gs 7b therein for the passage of 56 hot gases. This partition 7a with the equally spaced holes tberein aids in the (- Iistribiition of the combustion gases for prelieating purposes, and also in withdrawing the hot air from the kilns for cooling purposes. 60 Arranged at suitablo, points aroiin'd the upper edge, and bet-sveen the wall 1.,qnd the flaih wall 8, are horizontal spreaders 10 or iircuate spreaders 10a and 10b, as shown in Figures 13 to 16, inclusive, which serve to 65 divide the incoming hot gases int6 a large nui-nber of small streaiiis that pass upwardly and engage the donie or crown 11, which is coiicave in -shape and tends to catise the streams of risinoggases to converge towards 70 the top of the dome, and take a downward cotirse through the n-iaterial being burned, and out through the openings 4 in the flo'or, into the braiiehes 5, to the central chamber 5a. and outlet 5b, which leads into the I inlet 75 of the adjacent kiln. On top of the doiiie or crown is an openip,,- or hole, closed by a lid or cap 12. In the in-, let flue is a daiiipe@ 13, operated fi,oin the (yround leN7el. There is a siniilar damper 14 1711 the outlet flue 56. Between the flues 5b 80 an(-l 6 are openings or fan coiinections 33, later to be described. , For the purpo,,e of providin,-, as to the kilns a gas niaiii 15 is pi-ovi(led on one side of the single roiv of l(ilns, or on both sides 85 of the double row of kilns. Froin thes.e gas mains a brancli 16 exten(Is to a kiln main 17 for each kiln. These kiln mains extend in a circle around the top of tlie, wall, ancl have extending tlierefroin a pluraj'.ity of branches 90 18, each b.avin(y a v,,ilve 19 therein to control the flow of (ras tliei-ein. Each brinch 18 terminates iii- @t burner 20, -,vlileli projects tlirotigli the wall of the kiln, as siiown in Fi-tire 3. 95 Around eacli li:iln and below the ground surface is aii air I)il)e or di-aft flile 21, which lias extendin" til)Nvardl@, tliei-efroiii a branch 22 for eacli I)iti, iier.
