2 1,906,828 it is niv ptii, pose to provide such aii iiiterspaced 'relatioiiship of the parts as will enable ine to achieve in the folded over or knock-doivii constriietion, a box-like ai-raiigen-ient -%vith a central space siiitable f or the inclusion aiid storaae of tl-ie i-ilattress, beddin- tent, ext,rt potes and the like. In the preferrecl einbodii-tient of 11,13T bed structtire the side and end rails are f orined 10 of anole irons of as liglit a construction as is corisistent ivith the necessary sti, engtli, aiid I preferably forin niy frame with the liorizontal parts of the angle irons upon the bottom and extending inwardly of the bed. 15 I attacli iiiy sprina striieture to the s,,iid parts of the rails; ,tnd I have showii in Fiuure 1 a plui-ality of longitudinal teiisioniny members, wires or rods 6 held aiid tensioned at the end rails by coil sprinas 7. I have ,tlso 20 shown ,t plurality of tran@sverse tensioniiiin iiien-ibei-s 8 held and tensioned -,it the side rails 2 by coil springs 9. Interspaced equally oii either side of the Iiiii es 5, I htve sl@own traiisve@se teiision members 10, and it will 25 be seen that the lonoitudinal tensioi-i members 6 are jointed as at 11 adjacent the t@No central traiisverse tension members 10. This arrangement of the spi-ings, is iiidlicated quite clearly in Fig. 5, will, enable the springs 30 to asstime a box shape ivhen the bed is in the fol(led over positioii. The t-%vo centr,,tl l,tteral ties or tension meinbers 10 being vertically interspaced when the bed is in knoc'k-down position, and connected by the 35 central jointed portions of tl-ie longittidinal tie mcinbers 6. From @t consideration of Fig. 5 also, it -will be readily understood how my bed, when in folded over position, presents a, r(,Iatively larg.e central space for the storaae 40 of other art-icles. z@, In order that the two halves of the side rails 2 of the bed may be held in properly interspaced position when the bed is folded over (iiot olily to provide storage space for the 45 tent and bed clotl-iing as aforementioned, but also to provide space for the interfolded tent poles is I shall hereinafter more fully describe) I have devised a special Iiinge constriietion to permit the foldino- of the bed. 50 It will be clear from a consideration of the problem involved, that a hinge construction must be provided in which the pintle is interspaced by means of suitable members from the side rails of the becl. It is not practicable, 55 however, to use the pintle, as a primary pivot for the reason that the lonoitudinal tension iiieiubers of the bed will then tend forcibly to hold the bed in stretched out relatiowhip; and -wben it is desired to fold the bed over on 60 itself , it is necessary f orcibly to break tli-e side rails. This cannot b,,-, done conveniently by one man. After comiderable experiinentation, I have devised a type of means which I sliall now describe, and in which the pintle 65 does iiot act as the primary piyot point, ThiE@ hin(re is illtistrated in Firf 6. Side rail seetions 2 are bevelecl as at 12, an(I Iiinge plate n-lenibers 13 @ind 14 are fastened to the side rail sections by i@iveted spot -welds 15, or other suitable nieans. One of the hinge plates 70 is fastei-ied insicle one of the side rail sections 2, aiid the other on the outside of the correspoiiding sect, ioii. The hinae plates comprise body seciioiis 13a and 14a respectively, -which exteii(I upivardly of the side rails, a'nd - bear 7,5 at their upper ends rigl-it iiid left liind projections i-espectively, 13b and 14b. The pintle has a suitable bolt 16, as will be readily iin(,Ierstood. Instead of providina for the bolt 16 a hole thi-ouali the projections of the 80 hiiio-e 1)1,ites, in wliieh constriietion tl]Le pintle would act is the pii,ot point and tlle bed ivould be (lifficult to bi-eal@, I proi, ide slots 13c aiid 14f- i-espectii7ely, and the pintle 16 passes tlii-ou(yli tli,e 5 Z, se slois. In this construction 8 ivlieii I desii-e to fold over my bed as shown iii Figiii@e 5, the prim,,Iry pi-v,ot point is tl-ie poiiit of engag,-Inelit of the beveled ends of the si(le rail sectioiis -9, aiid is indicated in Fi-. 6 at 17. This poii-it is substantially iii 90 horizont,,tl alio-nnien4@- with the base of the tngje ii@ods coiiil)rising the side rails 2, and coiisequentlv substqntiallv iii line witli the ptill of the lon,,o-itLidinil teiisioil members 6 of the bQd sprinc, constriiction. Conseqtient- 95 ly iio substantiil foi-ce is required to breal@ the becl, iiad indee(,l as soon as ,t very sliglit an-ular relationsl-iip has been gii,en to the parts of the bed., the teiision of the longitudii)al tie iiiembers 6 a.,@s;sts the ftirtlier foldin(y 100 over iction. The I)iiitle 6 slides iii the slots 13a and 14c to the end tliereof, at ii,liieh point., howeiter, it begiiis to act as a pivot. The pintle bolt is therefore not tighteiied on the hinge 1)1,ites, altliou-h in i-riv I)refei, red cons triietion 105 it is supplied r, with a lock nut. When in extenclecl rela, tionship the weight of the t-wo parts of iaiy bed is sufficient to maintain the p,.irts in the desired positions. I may, however, if desired, equip the pintle bolt'i6 witli 110 a -wi . iia nut so that it may be tiolitened with the be"d either in extended or folded over condition. I have fotind, however, that this is not necessary. The dotted lines in Figure 6 show the relationshil) of tl-ie side rail sectioiis 115 in folded over position. The legs 3 of i-ny bed are preferably formed of pieces of angle iron braced by braces IS wbieli are pivoted against the en(I rails I of my becl, incl also by broken links 19. - ThuS 120 these le<),s inay be folded back ii@ainst the bottom of the bed by breakina the linlcs, as will be readily understood, ai@cl as is sho-,vii quite clearly in Figure 4. Since I have adopted for the reasons hereinabol,e clescribed, a, bed spring constrtictioii coniprisinu lateral tension members 8 and 10, I provide t bi-acing cop-structioil for tl-ie centril pol.tion of my bed ivliieli -@vill srN,-(, to Iceel) the @gid(, r,,til @;ections 2 in pi-oper parall.el i-e@30

These poles are braced 9 Lipoii one 35 side by braces 25 which ,ii,e pivoted to the (@nd rails of the bed as at 9,6.
