UNEUED STATES PATENT OFFECEO ALBERT S. EUX, ON CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO SIGNODE SYST=, XkC., A. CORPORATION OF DFLAWAP.R MACHINE FOR FORMING REENFORCING GIRTHS, 1,424,831. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug'. 8, 1922. Application :aled November To allqvho?aitnmy concern: Be it known that 1, AL13ERT S. Kux, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of, Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Machines for Forming Reenforeing Girths, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to maebines for forming reenforeinz girths to be subsequent10 ly used aS eledients @f joints in tension resisting box strapping or the like. It is an object of the invention to provide a machine of the character described of economical and siinple consti, uction and having 15 a large capacity. Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description to follow proceeds. In the drawings:- . Fig. 1 is an end elevation of the machiiie; 20 Fig. 2 is a transverse cross-sectional elevation of the machine; Fig. 3 is an elevati'on of the rear or feedinj c ,,;d of the machine; . 4 io 9 are fragmentary prospective 25 views of eiements of the machine showing steps in the formation of the reenforcing girths; F'g.,.10 is an elevation showing the strippinff iiiechanism; 30 Fig@. 11 is a perspective view of reenforeing girths, stich as formed bv the machine. The machine of my. inveiiiion is designed to take a flat strip of metal whose width is the width of a single reenforeinlr gi)rth flat35 tened out or tinfolded, and prei'erably of a length --Ufficient to form a plurality of reenforcing girths; to feed this strip into the machine; to cut it into blanks eac4 corresponding to the length of a reeifore . Ing 40 &'Jrth; to form these blank@ into re@iiforeing @l@rrtths, and to eject the finished reenforeing hs from the machine. The successive stages of the operation will be readily understood from'an inspection of Figs. 4 to 11. 45 In the drawings:-A pile of strips is placed tipon the feed tabl.e 2, which is provided with an inclined feed plate 3. The operator stands behind the feed table 2 and tishes the strips one by one down over the p 50 in(-lined feed plate 3 into a pocket formed - by the stationary plate 5 and the. movable stop 6. In this position of the strips, nipr)ei,s, each comprisi4g a resilient finger 7 ai@d a fin(,ei@ 8, move forward, eaeb nipper t7l 5,5 't-8 seizing it 13ortion of the strip which is 10, 1917. Serial No. 201,221. t o correspond to a blank. These nippers c arry the strip to the cutter blocks 9, when. t he cutters 10 sever it into blanks, each the l ength of a finished reenforeing girth. After t he cutting operation, the blanks are moved 6 0 f orward by the same ni'ppers over the travelli ng rail die 11, and the nippers '7-8 return. Before the nippers 7-8 have be,-un their ret urn movem nt, however, . e a plural 'ma nent magnets 12 descend each 66 a nipper @-S. These magnets se t he blanks from the fingers and t t he blanks in correct position with respect to t he rail die ll.; In the continued operation o f the maebine, the forming die 13 descends 7 0 u pon the blanks, resting upon the die 11, b ending down the edges of the blanks, as s hown in Fig. '7. Su,.bsequently, the forming fi ngers 14 bend the downturned portions of t he blanks under the top flanges of the die 7 6 1 1, as shown in Fig. 9 to- form a reenforeing g irth 15, such as shown in. Fig. 11 ' Then t he entire die 11, which is made at least twice -th a s 16ng as the len, of the strips f ed to the machine, is moved longitudinally 8 0 b y appfopriate mechanism to be described, e xposirig a new part of the die to receive the n ext batoh of blanks, and upon the subseq uent return movement of the die the reenf orcing -irths formed 'Lipon the preceding 8 5 c ycle, are stripped therefrom by the finger 1 6, which drops into the groove i7 in the top o f the die 11. Having outlined clearly the fundamental o peration of the machine, I will now describe 9 0 i n more detail the mechanism by which these r esults are a6complished: The fingers 8 which form one'half o,f the nippers, comp rise longiti-idir@ally extend ng stripq. which a re all secured in a carriage, comprising a 9 6 tr an,sverse plate 21, upon which the rear ends 2 2 of the strips 8 are sup@orted. Integral with the cross plate 20 aud At either side t h6reof, are downwardly faced concave @-uides, or runners. 23 (one of which is brok1 00 e n away,,in Fig. 2 to show the plate 20). These guides run upon the guide rails 24 ii pon extensions 25 of the main side frames 2 6 of the machine. The frame exten$ions 25 c arry at their inner erids the blocks 27, upon 1 05 t he iipper, faces of which are mountea the p lates 5, each of which is @Tooved as indicate d at 29 to receive the sliding strips 8, the t ops of the strips 8 being substantially flush with the top of the plates 5., The sticdng 110

cai-i-iage is operated by the link 30 connected to the carriage, plate 20 as shown at 31, aiid at its otlier end 32 connected to the lever 33, provided with a cam rollei- trai, elling in a ,5 cam patli 34 in the cani 35, t.Iiis cam beiiimoiinted iipon the sliaft 36, comprising the niai.n shaft of the machine. The stops 6 (wliieli lia-%,e I)een inentioned), slide,%,eitically in grooves in the rear face of 10 the blocks 2t. Tliel, foi,iii stops against which the opel-ator f@eds the strips iiid are witbdrai,%7h by means of the arm 37 of a bell criink pivotea on the sliaft 38 jotirnalled in the side franies 26 and liaving -,i second arni 15 39 provided with a ciiii roller which is Operated by an otitei- cam 40, wl-iieb is iipon ti.ie opposite side of the caiii 35 containing the caim path 34 liereinbefore des@ribed. As preiiously expl,,iined, the stops 6 liav20 ing been withdrawn, flie nippers eal-ry the strips to a position directl above the etitting blocks 9 and ther6 permit the sti-ips to remain for the cutting operation, an appropyiate dwell in the cam pith 34 1being. pi.(- 25 'vided to obtain this restilt. The ciitting blocks 9 are removably seciired in seats 41, remo-t-ably secured into the lietvy transverse be(f plates 42 bolted at eacli end to the tipper standards 43 of the macliine, one at 30 eaeb side thereof. Tt will be apparent that by this operation the blanks are formed into tli@ finis'ied article shown in Fig. 11. - I will now describe the arrangement for 15 e .iectin(y- the finished reinforcing girths from the mac@ine. The die rail 11 is operated through the rack 100 connected as now described, and is The at least twice as long as the strips 1. 20 side frames 26 are ea6h provided with seats 105 iipon which rests the heavy carrier block 106, which pans the space between the side frames and forms ,t heavy pressui-e resistin(, bed for the forming operation. Block 106 25 is channelled throughotit its len,-th. A carrier rail 108 slides in the chtnnel in the block 106, and it is this plate which receives the pres@ure of the forming. operation and commtinic@ates it to the block 106. The rack 100, 30 above described, is'preferably mtde separately -,ind secured by screws'or the like to ihe e'arrier rail 108, ,tnd the forming rail.11 is removably secured to the opposite,or top side of the @arrier rail 108. 35., Mounted in the left-hand side fr-,ime 26 of the machine, is the sliaft 120 (Fig. 3) equipped witli the 7ear 121 in mesli with the gear 122 on the main shaft 36. The shaft 120 carries upori its opposite end tlie, ctm 40 123, which operates the bell crank 124 (Figs. 1 and 3) pivoted in the boss 125 on the, side frame 26. Th(, upper end of the bell crank operates the cltitcli element 127, sleeved iipon a shaft 128, j&urnalled in the standards 129, 45 extending upwardly from the side frime of the machine. A stud sh,,tft 131 is joiii-n,tlled in one of the side frames 26 and is operated by the chain 132 by. means of suitable sprockets from the main sh,,tft 36. ITpon the 50 stud shaft 131 is the bevel (,,ear 1,13, which remains in mesh at all times with the bevel pinions 134 upon - the shaft i28, .,3aid pinions being loose upon the sllaft 128, while the clutch ele-ment 127 is splined 55 thereto. ' It is obvious by this means that the shaft 128 may be revolved in eitlieidirection or mtintained in neiiti-al I)osition tliroti,-Ii the intermediary of the cliitch slyown. The shaft 128 efirries iipon.its reitr en(-l the 60 135, whicli is in rnesli witli the rack 100 which operates the forining rail.
