UNITED ST@ATES PATENT OFFICE. ElYlIL C. DANNER, OF: WESTMONT BOROUGH, PENNSYLVANIA. SPRING-COILING MACHINE. 1,3449116. Specification of ietters Patent. Patented June 22,1920. Application filed November 20, 1919. Serial No. 339,312. Z'o all wlton?, it may coneem.- Be it Imown that I EMIL C. DANNER, a cit'zen of the Ur),ited Atates, residing in the borough of Westmont, in the county of Cambria an4 State of Pennsylvania, whose post-office address is Johnstown, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprin--Coiling Machines; and I d6 herewith declare the follo lowing to be. t@@full clear, and exact description, such as, will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. My in-,,ention relates t6 impr6vements in i5 m,,tchines for @spring coilino, and is more esp(,-cially designed for coil@i@ng heated bars of metal around a mandrel to form helical sprinc,,s. One of the objects of niy inveiition is to 20 provide a plurality of rotary mandrels upon which the coils are wound. Heretofore it has been the custom in making springs of this kind to have a single mandrel around which the heated bar is coiled and when it 25, is desired to make another size of spriiig the mandrel has to be removed and another one put in its place, which requires time and labor. After the hot bar is coiled aroiind the 3o forming 'mandrel if it@ is not removed . -Idy the contraction of the metal by coolqui(, ing aiad the scale which is formed, tend to cause the coilspring to stick to the mandrel around wbich it is formed, and it has here-, 35 tofore been a difficult and somewhat slow operation to remove the spring from the maiidrel,' as the spring is red-hot and the metal soft and easily bent out of shape -or distorted in the act of removino-. The man I4o drel soon becomes over-heated and has to be quenched or cooled, all of which requires work ,tnd time. In the construction.of m @invention I y obviate these diffictilti 6s, by h,,tving a plural-' 4,1, ity of rotliry rnandrels which may be rotated simultaneously and arrange in such a man-ner that while the heated bar is bein(y coiled on one mandrel, the completed spring is being removed from a second mandrel ,tnd 5o a third mandrel is being cooled or quenched. In this w,,ty the heated bar is quickly coiled upon the mandrel and then the mandrels are revolved and the coil reioaoved before -it contracts sufficiently to stick lipon the man55 drel. Another object of the @iiivention is to have the mandrels formed so they may be ea sily and quickly removed in order that the other sized mandrels may be substituted in their places,.so that different sized springs may 60 be formed ' A further objei,,t of my-invention relates to means for g@ripping the end of the spring, which means is controlled and operated by fluid-pressure; and still another object of my invention resides in the mecha- 65 nism for advancing the -uide for the springrod and carriage and then automaticall retractin! them at the end of the wor.Lng stroke My invention further consists in other: novel devices and combinations of 70 parts as will hereinafter more fully appear. Haviing thus given a gene@ral description of my invention, I will now, in order to make the matter more clear, refer to the annexed four sheets of drawings, which form 75 part of this specification and in which like characters refer to like parts.
